Assessment of Prior Learning

Assessment of Prior Learning (ALP) is a process that recognises and assesses current learning, giving credit for relevant study and relevant experience.

The benefits to a student in undertaking APL include:

  • Professional assessment and evaluation of prior learning and experience.
  • Fast track to completion of further study and training through recognition of past achievements.
  • Potential time and money savings by full or partial exemptions.

Students are eligible for APL if they have studied or gained qualifications in other relevant courses providing the qualification has been awarded within a five year period from the time of application. Cross crediting will be considered for all certificate courses, the Diploma in Therapeutic Massage, and for Year 1 and Year 2 of the Diploma in Naturopathy. Students may be required to undertake an assessment test to establish theoretical and practical competency.

Prospective students are required to complete an Application for Cross Crediting Form providing academic transcripts outlining the level of study and the topics covered. This must include course or unit objectives and learning outcomes. Relevant NZQA unit standards already completed are eligible for cross crediting (this includes unit standards passed for incomplete qualifications). Applications need to be submitted with a completed enrolment Form and a $100.00 cross crediting fee. It is important to include all relevant information at the time of enrolment, as this is the only occasion when an APL can be completed. Incomplete applications are not able to be processed until all information is received.

All applications are discussed and agreed with the student by the Education Manager before sending written confirmation. Each case is individually assessed covering all aspects of previous study and its application to the current course enrolment. The decision, once agreed with the student prior to the commencement of the course and based on a fair assessment of all supporting documentation, is final.
